Recruitment and selection methods (internal and external)
What this topic tests, the mistakes that cost marks, and one exam-style question worked through step by step.
Key ideas and common mistakes
- A job description details the tasks and responsibilities of a job role, not the skills or qualifications required (which are listed in a person specification), so confusing the two leads to an incorrect answer.
- Name an external method that reaches people outside the business, then explain why it suits LQM's small budget, busy shopping centre location, or need for experienced supervisors.
- Name each factor and explain its effect on the business, then pick one as most important and justify it by linking it to manufacturing work such as operating machinery safely.Common mistake: Students must identify relevant factors (like qualifications and experience) and justify which is most important by linking it specifically to the needs of a secondary sector (manufacturing) business, not just giving generic reasons.
- Explain two external ways of finding applicants, such as agencies or online adverts, with a benefit and drawback for each, then pick one and justify it by comparing cost, reach and suitability.
- State advantages of external recruitment that are specific to the business’s context (e.g. its industry, size, or structure), not just generic benefits, and avoid repeating the same advantage in different words.
