Structure and function of the heart
What this topic tests, the mistakes that cost marks, and one exam-style question worked through step by step.
Key ideas and common mistakes
- Identifying the left ventricle requires recognizing that anatomical diagrams of the heart are shown as viewed from the front, so the left side of the heart appears on the right side of the diagram.Common mistake: Students often confuse left and right.
- The heart's left and right sides are separated by a muscular wall called the septum.Common mistake: Students often confuse this with heart chambers or valves, but only the septum is the dividing wall.
- Identifying the septum as the heart structure that separates oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, rather than confusing it with valves or vessels that only direct blood flow but do not keep the two types of blood apart.
- The disease is named after the specific arteries affected (coronary arteries), not after the resulting event (heart attack) or the underlying process (atherosclerosis).Common mistake: Students must identify the condition by the blocked vessel's name.
- To compare heart structures, count the chambers and say how they are arranged (atria and ventricles), because circulation type and blood mixing are results of the structure, not structural features.
- Link a chamber's wall thickness to the distance it pumps blood: more muscle gives a stronger contraction and higher pressure, so the left ventricle, pumping round the whole body, needs a thicker wall than the atrium.
Worked example
State the name of the muscular wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart.
