TEXT 1
Home Truths: Teenagers and Their Families
Six teenagers from different homes talk about life with their families.
A - Hakim, 14
After school he helps at his parents' noodle stall until nine at night, so he often finishes his homework very late. He is tired but proud. "I want my parents to know they can rely on me," Hakim says.
B - Liyana, 16
Her younger brother keeps borrowing her headphones and books without asking, and they argue almost every day. "He's not a bad kid, but I wish he would respect my things and my space," she explains.
C - Kavin, 15
His parents work in Singapore, so he lives with his grandmother in Kuantan. They make a video call every Sunday. "When the call ends, I feel lonely, and the house seems very quiet," Kavin admits.
D - Dina, 17
Her parents often compare her school results with her cousin's straight A's. With SPM only months away, she cannot sleep well. "I wish they could be proud of me for trying, not for being someone else," she says.
E - Eric, 13
At dinner, everyone in his family used to stare at their phones. Last month Eric put a basket on the table and asked everyone to drop their phones into it. "I just want us to have a real conversation again," he says.
F - Farah, 16
Her family moved to a new town in January. Her parents are always busy with their new jobs and the unpacking. "Whenever I try to tell them about my day, nobody has time to listen," Farah says.
