Question
Methanol is manufactured from carbon monoxide and hydrogen over a copper/zinc oxide catalyst. Typical conditions are about 250 °C and 5000-10000 kPa.
reaction 2 CO(g) + 2H2(g) <=> CH3OH(g) ΔH = -91 kJ mol-1
A sealed container initially holding 1.50 mol of CO(g) and 3.00 mol of H2(g) and nothing else is allowed to reach equilibrium at a fixed temperature. At equilibrium the container holds 1.20 mol of CH3OH(g); the total pressure is then 5000 kPa.
Table 3.2
| CO(g) | H2(g) | CH3OH(g)
amount at the start / mol | 1.50 | 3.00 | 0
amount at equilibrium / mol | ? | ? | 1.20
mole fraction at equilibrium | 0.1429 | 0.2857 | ?
